  • Oscar Schmidt Autoharps
piano and trombone and eventually guitar proved a bit more rigorous The first autoharp was named and patented in the United States in 1882 by German immigrant Charles F Zimmerman His original design was more symmetrical and the felt mutes moved laterally not vertically Another German Karl August Gütter built an instrument that more closely resembles the modern Autoharp in 1883 Zimmerman started building Gütter s design and marketing the instrument under his more memorable autoharp nameplate Interestingly Zimmerman never trademarked the name autoharp and it wasn t until 1926 that Oscar Schmidt registered the name in the USA That registered trademark has now expired but Schmidt still holds a trademark on the stylized Autoharp text that appears on its instruments The Autoharp usually has 36 strings tuned pretty much chromatically and spanning several octaves Chords are formed by holding down one of the chord buttons which in turn presses felt mutes down onto the strings that don t fit the named chord As you strum the strings with your finger or plectrum only those notes that fit the chord are allowed to ring The instrument can be held across the player s lap or as has become common held upright against the left shoulder Chord buttons are manipulated with the left hand and strings are strummed with the right Oscar Schmidt builds two versions of the Autoharp the primary difference between the two being the number of chord buttons The 21 chord Autoharp has seven major seven minor and seven dominant seventh chords each row arranged based on the Circle of Fifths and grouped so that common chords for a given key are near to one another The 15 chord Autoharp seems less intuitive with major minor and seventh chords jumbled together but still grouped to keep chords together

I could learn a part and we could finish the recording In my current recordings and with my current bands I bounce back and forth between guitar bass mandolin and drums to fill whatever void we hear in the arrangement My first real band was put together after a girl asked me to prom my junior year 1986 I put together two guitarists a bass player a drummer and a sound engineer from friends I had in two other bands The high school band director loaned us the band room for rehearsal space and even offered to play keyboards For Sherry was recorded in three takes two of which were complete on the morning before prom and I presented it to Sherry that evening The original 1986 recording of For Sherry can be heard on my Sound Video page After some retooling I put together a more permanent band called Sound System and we played and recorded together in different lineups from 1986 to 1989 My acoustic duo project the audubon society followed Rob Straughn and I have performed composed and recorded together since 1988 We now call ourselves Smith Straughn In 1993 my friends James Haddox Dave Graham Tom Jirkovsky and I assembled Mystic East the first of my bands to make a foray into the Des Moines club scene We played several times at Safari Club and other Drake University area venues before we disbanded in late 1994 From 2009 to 2012 I was one of the core members of dUUdes the house band at the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines Always the utility man I moved around playing guitar bass drums mandolin banjo percussion and vocal as was necessary for any given song It was a great way to bring my love of music together with the principles I try to live by My solo recording career began with the breakup of Sound System in 1989 and continues to this day I m working and playing now with a band The Grape Ape Trust and three duet projects TMI The Word Green and Smith Straughn and feeling more motivated now than ever before to get my my music recorded and performed out in front of an audience I ve performed either solo or with one or more of my bands at the following venues Billy Joe s Lounge West Des Moines Bourbon Street Des Moines The Brass Rail Pleasantville Café Paradiso Fairfield Caffé A Roma Des Moines Carlisle Christian Church Carlisle Pumpkin Fest Chocolaterie Stam Ingersoll Avenue Des Moines Coda Lounge Renaissance Savery Hotel Des Moines Cumming Christian Church Demicon 20 21 22 23 24 Des Moines Des Moines Downtown Farmer s Market Des Moines Social Club First Unitarian Church of Des Moines House of Bricks Des Moines Hy Vee Hall Des Moines Indianola High School Indianola Methodist Church Indianola VFW Hall Java Joe s 4th Street Theatre Des Moines Lekberg Hall Indianola Mars Café Des Moines People s On Court Des Moines Pleasantville United Methodist

high school rock band Unexpectedly we got together again in early 88 to record Home Turf our first cassette of all original music We played more shows around Indianola and Pleasantville settling into a fairly permanent lineup through 89 Ray Yenzer and Phil Hudspeth eventually replaced Troy and Cliff respectively and singer Laura Galpin joined us in the summer of 89 In the spring of 1989 we began recording A Safe Place an ambitious collection with elements of rock folk jazz punk alternative and rockabilly The sessions and the band unfortunately began to break down by mid summer I left to pursue a solo recording career and Sound System morphed into Velvet Picasso an alternative cover band Steve and I eventually regrouped to operate Trifecta Recording Studio from 1992 2002 Justin and I currently work together in the band The Grape Ape Trust Currently Justin and I are laying down guitar bass vocal drum and keyboard tracks to finally complete A Safe Place We hope to get Steve and Phil and possibly brother Aaron to lay down guitar and vocal tracks and finally make this the project it was meant to be core members Justin Chastain keyboard trombone tenor saxophone
