Most musicians have been through the same frustration after a few months or years of playing with a gigging band it can feel like you re just going through the motions Business decisions come ahead of personal preferences You book gigs because they re good career moves not because you like the venues You play songs because you think the audience wants to hear them not because you like the songs The primary rule in The Grape Ape Trust is that when it stops being fun we stop If we don t want to play Freebird anymore we find a song we like to play instead If we need a night off from rehearsal we take it We take fun gigs even if they don t pay that well We have fun with the music and that energy and lightness of heart comes through in our performance Our live shows showcase an especially wide range of styles because we have four singers and songwriters Our original material coming as it does from four different perspectives sounds fresh varied and innovative CW s wide range is balanced by Bryan s more understated approach by Doug s jazz and blues interpretations and

  • TMI: a subset of The Grape Ape Trust
some members of the band can make it and others can t CW Smith and Bryan Baker of The Grape Ape Trust developed TMI for just such an emergency Each is an accomplished singer songwriter in his own right Each is comfortable on any of several instruments allowing for more variations in arrangement And each has a rich deep catalogue of songs they ve played with the GAT as solo artists or with other prior and current bands and projects The result can be the best of all possible worlds Smaller and more concise than The Grape Ape Trust Grittier and more danceable than Smith Straughn A deeper catalogue than the dUUdes Richer and fuller than CW s or Bryan s solo shows Not a replacement for any of these but a great side project and a lot of fun TMI has played at the following venues A Maze ing Days at Chichaqua Greenbelt Park Billy Joe s Lounge DemiCon 21 23 Des Moines Social Club Mars Café People s on Court Ritual Café CW and Bryan have also appeared on the Geek Speak webcast on webcastonelive com and online in Second Life Bryan Baker guitar baritone guitar bass guitar

lead and harmony vocal duties and switched instruments as appropriate to the song Pianist Bruce Martin drummer Pat Bell and other UUs and guests would join in as time permitted We ve often been asked how we came up with our name CW likes to joke that it s an acronym for Des Moines Unitarian Universalist Diversion and Entertainment Society Doug is more forthcoming we wanted to use UU in our name but after struggling with ideas like Upstaged Unicorns CW emailed back with a one word response dUUdes And the name stuck The dUUdes mission was to promote the Seven UU Principles through the popular music of the 20th and 21st centuries and through the original compositions of our members The dUUdes officially disbanded in the summer of 2012 but may still get together occasionally for special events In the fall of 2012 guitarist Doug Hoffman joined up with CW Smith again in CW s band The Grape Ape Trust Core members Doug Hoffman vocal guitar bass John Morrow vocal guitar harmonica Mike Schoonover vocal guitar bass CW Smith vocal guitar bass drums Occasional Emeritus Members Pat Bell Andy Lamont Bruce Martin Kellie Patterson Rob Straughn location Des Moines

was originally intended to be used here Demos of some of these songs date back to 1998 during the time when CW and Steve Hudspeth co owned and operated Trifecta Studio on Des Moines east side CW used nine different guitars and five basses throughout the process to give each song its own distinctive flavor But holding the whole disc together are two consistent instruments his 4 piece drum kit and his trusty Fender El Rio acoustic guitar Listen closely and you ll hear CW playing 6 and 12 string electric guitars 4 and 5 string fretted and fretless bass guitars baritone guitar and harmonica You can read about many of these instruments in detail on CW s Featured Instruments blog For lead and solo sections CW brought in some of his best musician friends to add their expertise as well The soloists include bandmates from five of CW s former and current bands Sound System Smith Straughn Mystic East dUUdes and The Grape Ape Trust as well as players he s worked with informally The liner notes for A Function of Time reflect a who s who of CW s musical career Bryan Baker Justin Chastain Darrel Cordova Brandon

knows I spent many hours pretending to be James Bond or Maxwell Smart I realized that this sort of play is likely a pretty universal theme for most kids The EP contains two mixes of Under the Radar a demo recording of Might As Well Be Rain and a special live recording of Don t Tell Me one of my earliest compositions from even before my days with Sound System

purchased some updated recording equipment and tried again The result is a very personal performance with the intimacy and immediacy of a living room concert the perfect companion piece to my later more electric CD A Function of Time In effect Renaissance Man serves three purposes as a review of South of Dakota Long Way Misunderstanding You It Happened One Night a preview of A Function of Time Leap of Faith Eyes of a Common Man Might as Well Be Rain Yesterday a Long Time Ago and as an overview of my older material All the songs on Renaissance Man were recorded using my Fender El Rio guitar and a single vocal microphone live and in one or two takes without overdubs It s so much easier to record a simplified guitar and vocal recording than to lay down track after track after track like many of my previous recording projects With my current focus on live acoustic performances at venues like Ritual Café Chocolaterie Stam and the Des Moines Social Club this seemed like a good way to offer a CD that reflects my performances there The front cover a parody of Leonardo DaVinci s Vitruvian Man was painted
